About this trip
The Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reserve, located north of Berlin, is one of the largest forest reserves in Germany. Where the beech trees thin, there are fantastically beautiful lakes, old monasteries - and the home of the sandman.
Just 45 minutes by train from Berlin, right in the middle of it, lies Kloster Chorin: a 13th-century Cistercian abbey built from red brick in the gothic style. Its tall, roofless walls stand quietly between old trees and a lake, and in October the whole place glows.
We will take the regional train out of Berlin together, walk to the abbey and explore it at our own pace. After a picnic lunch we head into the Kroneiche beech forest for a loop under golden and copper leaves, then stroll back to the station in the afternoon light. No rush, no pressure, just fresh air, good conversation and new faces. Many people come alone, and that is exactly the idea. Beginners are welcome.
Kloster Chorin: one of the finest examples of brick gothic in Brandenburg, with the abbey church, cloister and grounds to wander through.
